What are the must have family photos? I first began photographing families before I ever begin photographing weddings. While weddings are most of what you might see on my website and instagram, you can find me photographing families all throughout the year. After years of photographing family sessions I have come to find I have a few must have photographs I strive to get. Refer back to this blog when you are planning your family session!

MUST HAVE FAMILY PHOTOS:

• Full Family Photo – with everyone smiling if they are able
• Mom with kids
• Dad with kids
• Just the kids
• A portrait of each kid
• Photos capturing the personalities of the kids, whether they are playing, being silly or shy, we want to remember who they were at this age.
• Just Mom and dad
• A silly photo of the full family

While we strive to capture each of these types of family photos, we always let the kids be kids. The best photos come when we let life happen. Some of my favorite photographs of family are the unscripted. When the kids are free to be themselves they tend to let go a little bit and enjoy the process. You may find yourself surprised at the photo you love the most from your family session, it’s rarely the picture perfect, everyone looking at the camera. It’s usually the photograph that you can see each childs personality shine through!
